Lisandro Martinez could leave Manchester United in the upcoming transfer window, with reports saying he has reached a preliminary agreement on personal terms with Atlético Madrid. The Argentine defender appears to have made up his mind to start a new chapter in Spanish football.
According to “CaughtOffside”, the 28-year-old wants to leave “Old Trafford”, while so far there has been no official communication between the two clubs regarding the completion of the transfer. However, it is reported that a meeting was held in Madrid to discuss the possibility of the deal.
“TEAMtalk” also reports that Martínez does not want to continue at Manchester United and does not intend to activate the clause to extend his contract by an additional year. The Argentine’s current agreement with the English club runs until 2027.
Recently, the defender has been at the center of criticism for several errors on the pitch, especially after the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea. Former players Freddy Ljungberg and Peter Schmeichel have criticized his performances, while Danny Murphy has described him as a burden for the team.
The January transfer window may be Manchester United’s last opportunity to profit financially from his departure, before his contract enters its final year.
