Real Madrid is set to appoint tennis legend Rafael Nadal to the club’s board of directors. Nadal, a winner of 22 Grand Slam titles, has been an honorary member of the club since 2011 and has a strong relationship with Madrid president Florentino Perez.
The Madrid club expressed great pride in the appointment, stressing that a figure of Nadal’s sporting and human stature, a point of reference for Spanish and world sport, will contribute to the present and future of the club. This was announced in an official statement from Los Blancos.
Real Madrid members, known as ‘socios’, are expected to ratify Nadal’s appointment at the club’s general assembly on November 21. Nadal himself, on the social platform X, thanked president Florentino Perez and the board for the proposal.
He said he had accepted the proposal with great enthusiasm, expressing his desire to learn and to contribute with everything he can. Nadal, 40, won a record 14 French Open titles during his outstanding career.
In 2023, Nadal had said that one day he would like to be president of Madrid, but was not sure whether he was qualified for the post. Before this year’s club elections, he distanced himself from reports that he would run. Perez won the elections in June, defeating Enrique Riquelme.
