Roma has recorded a negative first in its Champions League history after suffering a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, despite having built a two-goal lead.
According to the statistics, this is the third time in the Italian club’s history that Roma has lost a Champions League match after leading by two goals. What makes this statistic even more worrying is that two of these cases have occurred during this season.
The Italian side had previously experienced a similar situation against Real Madrid, and the scenario was repeated in the away fixture against Manchester United. Roma have thus thrown away two-goal leads in European matches within the same season.
At Old Trafford, Roma started the match very well, taking a lead with two goals scored by Mattia Solé and Donyell Malen. However, everything changed in the second half, when Manchester United reacted powerfully.
Bruno Fernandes first reduced the deficit, before Matheus Cunha took on the role of the main protagonist. The striker scored twice, in the 83rd and 86th minutes, turning the result around and handing the English side a spectacular 3-2 win.
For Roma, this defeat represents another heavy blow, not only for the result but also for the way the team lost control of a match that seemed to be in their hands. Two such comebacks within a single season are a warning sign for the Italian side.
