La Liga president Javier Tebas has commented on some of the most debated issues in Spanish football, not holding back criticism of Real Madrid. From the controversy over the match schedule and the penalty awarded to Kylian Mbappé, to the Negreira case and the club’s official television channel, Tebas has given his positions.
“As a fan, from my point of view, I don’t think it was a penalty. But why didn’t VAR intervene? That question should be directed to the head of the Technical Committee of Referees. Perhaps the referees made a mistake, but VAR should have intervened at least, since the action looked like a clear foul,” Tebas said.
The La Liga chief also responded to criticism from José Mourinho about Real Madrid’s congested fixture schedule. The Portuguese coach had raised concerns about how the matches were organized, but Tebas suggested he should direct his response to the club’s leaders.
“He should ask Emilio Butragueño, because he will explain the issue to him. When there is a free date, things get organized, whereas when it is not possible, they cannot be done. He knows this situation well from his experience in the Premier League, where he played matches with a gap of no more than 48 hours,” the La Liga president stated.
Regarding the much-discussed Negreira case, which has long shaken Spanish football, Tebas used an ironic statement, referring to the impact this case has had on the debate over refereeing.
“It seems Negreira is present in the referees’ dressing rooms during their matches,” he said.
Finally, the La Liga president also attacked Real Madrid’s official television channel, accusing the club of constantly opposing the initiatives of the institution he leads.
According to Tebas, the Madrid club’s positions are causing considerable damage in relation to television rights, affecting not only La Liga but also other Spanish clubs.
