Albanian private hydropower plants increase production

Production of electricity from small and medium-sized private hydropower plants increased by almost a quarter in 2014, compared with 2013, Albanian Daily News reported Monday.

Private plants generated 788,000 megawatt-hours, covering slightly more than 11 percent of the Albania's need, it said.

The increase in production has come as a result of the completion of some investment projects.

The Albanian government has issued over 100 concession contracts to build more than 300 hydropower plants. But only a small part of them have been completed.

Investments in the sector in Albania reportedly are threatened by the government's tax and price reduction policies.
