FBI probing FIFA over Russia, Qatar World Cup
NEW YORK – The FBI is investigating FIFA for possible corruption in the way it awarded the 2018 and 2022 World Cup to Russia and Qatar respectively, US media cited investigative sources as saying Wednesday.
Swiss authorities last week announced a similar probe into the awards procedure that took place five years ago, sparking criticism of ex-FIFA chief Sepp Blatter.
The decision to set the World Cup in Qatar was widely berated, as the Gulf nation lacks soccer experience and infrastructure.
Blatter resigned Tuesday as the corruption scandal gathered steam, prompting Russian Sport Minister Vitali Mutko to comment that "no resignation can cancel the decision on which country is to host the 2018 World Cup".
