Following his transfer from the Durrës prison to the one in Fier, Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj has started a hunger strike, refusing food in protest against the decision. He disputes the way the transfer was carried out, which he considers unjustified and politically motivated. During the morning, Veliaj was visited by his mother, who brought a bag of food with her. A few hours later, his wife, Ajola Xoxa, accompanied by their baby, also arrived at the prison.
The transfer has also sparked debate within the Socialist Party, where the focus has been on the documentation and institutional responsibility for the decision taken. During a meeting of the Socialist parliamentary group, MP Bledi Çuçi demanded an explanation from Justice Minister Toni Gogu regarding the documents accompanying Tirana’s mayor’s transfer.
“Where is the transfer letter? You should have obtained it before entering. If you don’t have it, resign”, Çuçi reportedly told the minister during the discussions. For his part, Veliaj yesterday described the transfer from the Durrës prison to the one in Fier as a “police abduction” and an action with political undertones. He claims the process was carried out without transparency and that official documentation, along with the legal reasons behind this decision, were not made available to him. The mayor publicly addressed the Justice Minister, the People’s Advocate and the Albanian Helsinki Committee, calling for urgent intervention to verify the legality and motives of the transfer.
