Samanda Toçka joins Grida Duma Podcast with a moving account of a family scattered across the world, economic hardship, and the disillusionment of a generation trying to build its future in Albania.
“We don’t want to burn anything! They haven’t listened to us!” says Samanda, explaining through tears the anger of young people protesting for more opportunities and a better life.
At only 22 years old, she describes the difficulties of making ends meet in Tirana, where of a salary of 500,000 old lekë, 400,000 goes on rent. “I work seven days a week! I couldn’t even see my family”, she recounts, asking how anyone can buy a new apartment on such an income.
Samanda also speaks about her disappointment after trying to find work in the administration, where, in her view, personal connections often seem to count for more than diplomas.
“I’m 22 years old, I don’t even know how a government is formed! Nothing is invisible!” she says, conveying the message of a generation that wants to be heard.
A story beyond the protest, about unfulfilled dreams, family, and the wish not to be forced to leave your country.
