There were many clashes for about 1 hour during the first plenary session after the student protests, where tensions between the opposition and the majority were evident. Immediately, Democratic Party (PD) MPs blocked the plenary session, with calls against the government. They demanded a political solution for the protest that has been held for 10 days in Tirana. PD Secretary General Flamur Noka initiated the action, after which he moved to the majority’s row, where he clashed with the parliamentary group leader of the Socialist Party (PS), Taulant Balla.
“No statement justifies violence. The police are overstepping their duty.”, said the parliamentary group leader of the PS. Earlier, PD Deputy Chairman Belind Këlliçi, in his speech in parliament, stated that the PD parliamentary group supports the protest and condemns the brutal violence against young people.
“Today is day 10 that Albania is experiencing the most powerful student movement. The state has been captured by Rama’s absolute power. This movement is a revolt against the model created by Rama that is moving Albania away from its European future. The PD parliamentary group will remain by the side of the students and every citizen who protests for dignity. We condemn the brutal violence against students, the reprisals against young men and women, and the blackmail that the illegitimate prime minister has carried out every day,” he said.
Due to the tension, the session moved directly to a vote following the majority’s proposal. During the voting, opposition MPs tried forcefully to prevent the vote, attempting to break through the guard’s barrier and push Socialist MPs. At one point, PD MP Fidel Kreka struck Socialist MPs with a plastic bottle. Under these circumstances, the Socialist majority cancelled all debates and proceeded to vote on the draft laws.
PD leader Sali Berisha remained seated in his chair, giving instructions to his colleagues on what to do.
The session closed after one hour.
