Over an hour of clashes was seen in the first plenary session after the student protests, where tensions between the opposition and the majority were high. Immediately, Democratic Party (PD) MPs blocked the plenary session, with calls against the government. They can be heard calling for a political solution to the protest that has been held in Tirana for 10 days. PD Secretary General Flamur Noka pushed and knocked the microphone of Socialist Party (PS) parliamentary group leader Taulant Balla, and the plenary session continues with tensions.
“No statement justifies violence. The police are overstepping their duty.”, said the head of the PS parliamentary group. Earlier, PD deputy chairman Belind Këlliçi, in his speech in parliament, said the PD parliamentary group supports the protest and condemns the brutal violence against young people.
“Today is day 10 that Albania is experiencing the most powerful student movement. The state has been captured by Rama’s absolute power. This movement is a revolt against the model created by Rama that is moving Albania away from its European future. The PD parliamentary group will remain by the side of the students and every citizen who protests for dignity. We condemn the brutal violence against students, the reprisals against young men and women, and the blackmail that the illegitimate prime minister has carried out every day”, he said.
Due to the tension, the vote was held directly after the majority’s proposal. During the vote, opposition MPs tried physically to prevent the voting, attempting to break through the guard’s fence and push PS MPs. At one point, PD MP Fidel Kreka struck PS MPs with a plastic bottle. Under these conditions, the socialist majority cancelled all debates and moved to vote on the draft laws.
PD leader Sali Berisha remained seated in his chair, giving instructions to his people on what to do.
The session ended after one hour.
